Radiation Safety Information

At Larchmont Medical Imaging, patient safety is top priority—and that includes helping patients and their primary care clinicians manage their exposure to medical radiation for imaging exams. If you are scheduled for a study that exposes you to radiation you can be confident that our dose management protocols and our participation in two radiation safety programs ensures you will receive the lowest dose possible.

Image Wisely

To help establish national protocols for medical radiation safety for adults, the American College of Radiology and the Radiological Society of North America initiated the Image Wisely program. The Image Wisely principles serve as radiation safety guidelines for participating imaging centers. For adult patients, Larchmont medical imaging follows these guidelines, which were developed with input from the American Association of Physicists in Medicine and the American Society of Radiologic Technologists.

Image Gently

If your child needs an imaging procedure, it’s understandable that you might be concerned about radiation. At Larchmont Medical Imaging, we want you to be aware that we share your concerns!

Although research shows that risks associated with medical radiation exposure are small and inconclusively proven, we believe that any possible risk should be taken seriously—especially with children. That’s why Larchmont Medical Imaging participates in the Image Gently program.

The Image Gently program was created by the Alliance for Radiation Safety in Pediatric Imaging, a group of radiologists, pediatricians, family practitioners, and other medical professionals dedicated to raising awareness that radiation doses in medical imaging can be lowered while still meeting the diagnostic needs of pediatric patients. Participating facilities pledge to:

  • Image only when there is a clear medical benefit
  • Use the lowest adequate amount of radiation, based on the size of the child
  • Image only the specific area of the body that needs to be studied
  • Avoid multiple scans
  • When possible, use types of imaging studies that do not use radiation, such as ultrasound or MRI

When you bring your child to Larchmont, you can be confident that we make special provisions for their safety.
