What Is 3D Mammography?

Three-dimensional (3D) mammography is a women’s imaging study that expands upon traditional two-dimensional (2D) mammography studies to include additional angles of breast tissue. 3D mammograms use multiple breast X-rays to capture 3D images of breast tissue. In comparison to 2D mammograms, 3D mammograms can capture additional areas of the breast tissue to improve breast cancer detection rates.

What Are The Benefits of 3D Mammography?

3D mammograms may be conducted as a screening or a diagnostic mammogram. A 3D mammogram generates three sets of breast images. One set is a series of images from above the breast tissue. Another set is a series of images from the side of the breast tissue. Lastly, a set of images is taken at various depths in the breast tissue. Here are some of the benefits:

  • Provides clearer images in women with dense breast tissue.
  • Improves early breast cancer detection rates.
  • Reduces the likelihood of false flags that lead to further testing.

How Do I Prepare For A 3D Mammogram?

There is no special preparation for a 3D mammogram. The preparation for a 3D mammogram is the same as a 2D mammogram. Avoid scheduling your appointment during a period where your breasts may be more tender than usual. Don’t wear any deodorant, lotions, creams, or other products on the day of your appointment. These products may skew the results of your mammogram if worn on the day of your appointment. Avoid wearing any kind of jewelry to your appointment.
